What to do with That Microphone

voicethreadpencils.png  Have you got a microphone attached to your computer?  Built-in microphone in your laptop?  Win a USB microphone at a workshop?  Wondering what to do with it?

Digital storytelling, narration, “Skype-ing,” and podcasting are all worthy activities, but have you tried Voicethread yet?

Voicethread is a web 2.0 application that allows you to upload a picture or video clip and make comments about the topic in the photo.  Visitors to your “thread” are also able to comment or respond to comments others leave.

So why is this so cool?  You can take a look at the website, but what I like about it is the ease of use, flexibility, and FREE “Pro” account for teachers!  Sign up with an email and a password.  If you have a photo to represent yourself, that’s wonderful.

The power of the human voice is the key to voicethreads, so make sure your microphone is plugged in, and tell the world your story!  No microphone?  Leave a text comment or PHONE IN your comment!  Webcam?  Yup, that works too!

If your family is spread far and wide during the holidays, you might want to post photos of what went on at your house and get family and friends to leave comments.

I’ve already begun using it as an online meeting place for the K-5 District Technology Committee (you can browse for “K-5 DTC” at the voicethread website), and Jen Newcombe just started to use it so students can conduct book talks online.

So warm-up your vocal cords and plug in that microphone!  As always, if you need assistance, send me an email, and I’ll join you in your classroom to help with any technology project.
