Media Monday

Science is one of the subjects I love the most, so when I was teaching, I pulled out the stops to make science as interesting and multidisciplinary as possible–that included having students perform a song about the way the Sun works.

I was so happy that my favorite band, They Might Be Giants, released an EP called Why Does the Sun Shine? (a.k.a. The Sun is a Mass of Incandescent Gas).  When I played it for my students, you should have seen their faces–they couldn’t believe that I found such a corny song about something in science.  Well, that lasted about a minute as they got into the catchy tune and began begging me to play it every morning.

They Might Be Giants can also help you with molecules, colors, cells, and states of matter (as well as a re-release called Why the Sun Really Shines) on their album Here Comes Science.

Look for it at the usual places (iTunes, Amazon, etc.) for download, and try playing a few songs for your students.  I’d love to have a project where the students create their own music videos about science using one of the TMBG songs as a starting point.  Good luck, and remember that the Sun isn’t a mass of incandescent gas, but a miasma of plasma!
